Presentation Skills: Shift Gears For Maximum Performance

Posted by aokimi on August 10, 2008

Do you know what “monotone” means? It means using the same tone of voice and rate of speech throughout your presentation.

If you speak in a monotone voice, you’ll make a boring speech with little impact.

To rev up your speech, shift gears! Vary your rate of speech and use dramatic pauses to capture your audience’s attention.

Start talking faster as you race to an important idea. Then slam on the brakes. Say your brilliant idea slowly. Then pause for a moment to let your audience absorb your suggestion.

This technique highlights your important idea so your audience remembers it. And they’ll remember you as an exciting speaker who captivated their interest.

  1. Mike, Here are some good techniques for effective public speaking. Strong and confident pauses are so important. We rarely use them in conversation. But in presentations and public speaking they make it all possible.
    Peter.
